An American slang expression dat- ing from the first half of the 1900s, this imperative is believed to have origi- nated in sports, where it is often shouted as an encouragement to a competitor or team. However, it also is used as a simple verb meaning the same thing, as in, “He has managed to hang in even though he does not have tenure.”
